About Our Organization
Big Brothers Big Sisters is a non-profit, child mentoring agency that creates lasting and beneficial friendships. We match school-aged children from one-parent households in a one-to-one friendship with an adult volunteer. “Bigs” and “Littles” spend a couple hours a week together doing normal activities like watching TV, playing video games or just hanging out. Kids who are matched with a “Big” have more self esteem, receive better grades, are less likely to use drugs and alcohol and get along better with their families. For each child that receives a Big it costs approximately $1,000 a year to support the match. This money is used for staffing, screening, marketing, recruitment and other program costs. 100% of the money raised in Johnson County, MO stays in Johnson County.
“Elaina, my Big Sister, is a great Big. She is my confidante and best friend. She is a very positive role model for me and I can talk to her about any and everything without being judged. She is helping me to succeed above and beyond in school as well as in my everyday life.” - Little Sister Deneisha, 12 years old
